Fifth Grade
Language Arts:
In 5th grade, students work to further develop and enhance their language arts skills. Language Arts consists of vocabulary development, reading for adventure, and meeting everyday challenges where students are able to use and express themselves in written and oral context. These challenges are met through forms of poetry, journal writing, and everyday writing as they become young authors. By the end of their 5th grade year, students have developed mastery of grammar, mechanics, and are prepared to expound upon them further in middle school.
Math:
Students use and practice math skills that enable them to become global, as well as, critical thinkers. The four basic mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, graphing, problem-solving, fractions, percentages, and algebraic expressions are taught. Students will demonstrate their ability to work through these skills and by the end of 5th grade, they are able to apply these skills to real-world applications.
Religion:
Fifth grader students can typically be characterized as being social, expressive, and verbal. They are increasing their ability to think abstractly and can concentrate for longer periods of time. This year in the We Believe Religion series, students will be asked to link their growing ability to think abstractly with the meaning of the sacraments as signs of God's love. We will incorporate their innate concern for fairness to help them understand that God's love for all means that work for justice and peace are vital. Fifth graders are sensitive to the values of their peer group, and we will stress the importance of their words and actions to show solidarity to their families, their Church and disciples of Jesus worldwide.
Social Studies:
The 5th grade Social Studies curriculum is designed to inform the students of the historical aspects of the United States currently, and in an ever-increasing interconnected world. It enables students to understand how the past influences and impacts the present, as well as the future. By the end of this year, students learn how to become a good citizen and live in our ever-changing society, which is bound with rules and laws that we must obey.
Science:
As a fifth grader, students are taught a variety of sciences: life, earth, and physical science. They engage, explore, and expedite aspects of the scientific method through projects and technology usage. They participate in many hands-on activities and projects throughout the year that involve real-world application of the scientific method. Students also have projects that correlate to a specific area of study at that time. By the end of their 5th grade year, students are able to ask questions and use scientific inquiry to come to a conclusion. They are able to use tools in order to explore the changing world around them. Finally, they are also able to appreciate living and non-living things in our environment.
