Second Grade

In second grade, students are building on their many first grade skills in order to become independent readers, writers, and problem-solvers.

Language Arts:

Language Arts consists of reading, writing, spelling/phonics, vocabulary and grammar.  Students develop an extensive sight word vocabulary and apply more complex phonics strategies.  Both of these skills will help us as they improve their independent reading and writing abilities.  Students will read a variety of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, and informational texts to deepen their comprehension.  Not only will they learn to write in complete sentences and paragraphs, but they will be able to write reports, narratives, poems, and letters. In grammar, they work toward mastering nouns, adjectives and verbs in the past, present and future tense.

Math:

As students discover numbers in the world around them, they are able to master and explore many skills. We begin with mastering our basic addition and subtraction facts with fluency and accuracy. Later in the fall, our class focuses on double and triple digit addition and subtraction to 1,000.  In winter, they learn how to use money in real life situations, develop spatial reasoning in relation to geometric shapes, and apply various methods of measurement.  In the spring, students are introduced to the process and reasoning of multiplication and division.

Religion:

During Religion, second graders will further their understanding that the Church is a community of God’s people.  They develop an awareness that everyone becomes a member of the Church family through the sacrament of Baptism; that people are strengthened through the sacrament of the Eucharist and are reconciled through the sacrament of penance.  They are given the opportunity to deepen their personal faith through daily prayer and through liturgical and moral formation.

Science:

Second grade is about observing and appreciating God’s wonderful creation.  Life Science includes, plant and animal habitats both on land and in water, life cycles, and the food chain.  In Earth Science, students study space, constellations, planets, and how the earth and sky can change.  Physical Science consists of forces and motion, and the law of magnetic attraction.

Social Studies:

Social Studies offers 2nd graders an opportunity to investigate our amazing state!  Georgia has a rich history rooted right here in Macon. Students discover the cultures of local Native Americans, events of how Georgia was settled, and what has impacted our growth as a state physically and economically.  Georgia is a physically diverse state, with mountains, hills, valleys, plateaus, and plains all of which will be studied throughout the year.  They get to know our community leaders and their roles in our city government and will explore historical sites throughout our city itself.

SEL:

Though we have always had guidance lessons interwoven in our curriculum, since Covid, SPCCS has implemented a dedicated Sociak Emotional Learning (SEL) program to help students find constructive ways to deal with emotions and interact with one another in respectful ways.  SEL aims to help students better understand their thoughts and emotions, to become more self-aware, and to develop more empathy for others within the classroom, their communities, and the world around them.
